The Mid-Century Holiday Glow-Up: The Search for the Perfect "Soft Light"

The Mid-Century Holiday Glow-Up: The Search for the Perfect "Soft Light"

Hey everyone, welcome back to the blog!

It’s that time of year again. The tree is going up, the garlands are hung, and we’re all looking for that perfect, cozy ambiance to ride out the winter. There’s something about holiday decor that makes us re-evaluate our spaces. You realize that one dark corner needs something, or that your current dining room light just isn't doing justice to your festive tablescape.

Usually, we talk about trends or brief introduction here. But today, I want to do something a little different. I want to take you behind the curtain and share a page from my personal design journal. And also prepared some Christmas discount surprises for everyone!

The Designer’s Monologue: Capturing the Glow 🎇

When I sat down to draw the Nelson Bubble series, I wanted to move away from the cold, industrial look of exposed bulbs and clear glass. I wanted a fixture that didn't just light up a room, but changed the mood of the room.

I kept sketching these organic, floating shapes-pears, saucers, cigars... I wanted them to look weightless. But the material was the challenge.

Fabric was maybe has a bit heavy and collected dust easily.

Paper was too fragile; one accidental poke and it’s ruined.

Glass was too heavy and created harsh glare.

I realized I needed a "skin." I needed a material that would act like a cocoon-wrapping the light source so tight that the bulb disappears, leaving only a pure, diffused glow. That was the "Aha!" moment. We decided to use a specialized polymer that is sprayed over a steel skeleton. It’s tough, but when the light hits it... it’s magic!

From Sketch to Reality: The Production Process 🙌

I want to show you exactly how we bring my sketches to life in our workshop. This isn't a stamped-out plastic mold; it's a process of sculpture.

  • Phase 1: The Steel Skeleton

Every lamp starts as a raw steel wire cage. When I inspect these frames on the factory floor, I’m looking for perfect symmetry. The welding has to be invisible. If the frame isn't perfect, the skin won't sit right.

  • Phase 2: The "Cocooning"

This is my favorite part to watch. We place the steel frame on a rotating spindle. As it spins, our artisans use a spray gun to apply the polymer web.

It starts as a "spiderweb", bridging the gaps between the steel wire cage. Layer by layer, the "web" thickens into a solid, taut skin. It’s a delicate dance-spray too little, and it’s brittle; spray too much, and you lose translucency. Our team has this down to a science.

  • Step 3: The Cure & Post-Processing

Once it cures, the material transforms. It looks delicate-almost like Japanese rice paper-but touch it, and you'll feel that it's resilient and slightly elastic.  It’s this unique texture that diffuses light so beautifully, eliminating harsh shadows. It’s designed to last for decades, not just a season.

After the lampshade has cured and dried, workers will install the metal components at the top and bottom of the lampshade, thus completing the finished lampshade.

Living with the Light ✨

When I design, I always think about the end user-You! I know that hanging a light can be stressful. That’s why we engineered the suspension system to be lightweight.

Because the Nelson Bubble lamps are Polymer and Steel Wire, they are incredibly light. You don't need heavy-duty ceiling anchors.

You can watch the following video to quickly learn about the manufacturing process and simple installation steps of the Nelson Bubble series pendant lights:

They fit anywhere. Because the design is so clean and elemental, it doesn't clash with existing decor. It looks just as at home in a minimalist Brooklyn apartment as it does in a rustic farmhouse living room.

Why I Want This in Your Home for Christmas 🔔

I didn't just these to look good in a catalog; I hoped them to be lived with.

As we head into Christmas, we are all craving "Hygge", that feeling of cozy contentment. The Nelson Bubble Series is the ultimate holiday lighting because:

  • It Mimics Snow: The white, textured surface looks like a glowing snowball or a vintage ornament.
  • Zero Glare: You can sit around the dinner table for hours without a bright bulb shining in your eyes.
  • It’s Timeless: This design isn't a fad. It will look just as elegant next Christmas as it does this, and it complements a wide variety of decorating styles!

Space/Style Recommendations

If you have high ceilings, I recommend the "Cigar" type. For dining tables, go with the "Saucer" type!

🛸 The "Saucer" Type (My personal favorite for dining tables): Shop Model A or Model B.

🧅 The "Cigar", "Pear" or more Type (Organic and soft): Shop Model C~Model I.
