Wobbling, noisy or vibrating fan?Here's how to fix it.
Start with what you're seeing or hearing. Six symptoms lead to six causes, and every cause has a fix you can do at home with a manual screwdriver and the balancing kit from your box.
Switch off at the breaker
The wall switch alone isn't enough. Cut power at the circuit breaker before removing the canopy or touching any screw.
Hand tools only
Never put a power drill on a fan. Solid wood blades are soft – a drill strips the screw holes in seconds. Use a manual screwdriver with even hand pressure.
Use a stable ladder
Everything here is overhead work. Set the ladder squarely under the fan so you can reach the canopy and every blade without leaning.

What are you noticing?
Pick the one that matches best. Each symptom points to a single most-likely cause, and every cause has its fix in step two below.
Most likely cause
The hanging ball isn't seated in the bracket groove
Instead of locking onto the ridge inside the ceiling bracket, the ball at the top of the downrod is resting beside it. The fan swings instead of pivoting, and every rotation lifts the ball a fraction and drops it back – that's the click. On a newly installed fan this is the number-one cause.

Blade screws tightened unevenly
One blade-to-motor screw has been driven harder than the others, pulling that blade a fraction closer to the motor. The set is slightly out of balance and the motor hums against it.

A blade or blade bracket is bent
A blade or its metal bracket was bent in transit or on the ladder. A difference of just 2° puts that blade tip on a different circle from the rest – no amount of screw-tightening will bring it back.

One blade sits at a steeper pitch
Blade brackets are set to about 13°. One that's been bent to 15–18° bites more air on every pass, producing extra lift and drag on one side of the motor. You hear it as a pulse and feel it as more breeze under one blade.

The downrod or ceiling connection is loose
Either the downrod-to-motor screws and safety pin have worked loose, or the fan is hanging from a junction box that was never rated for a moving load. The movement travels up the rod into the ceiling and the canopy buzzes against it.

The blades are out of balance
No two blades weigh exactly the same, and a few grams' difference at the tip is amplified as the fan speeds up – like a washing machine with the laundry bunched to one side. The balancing kit in your box corrects this in 10–15 minutes.

Causes and how to fix them
Jump to the cause your symptom pointed to, or work through all six in order – the first three account for most wobble on a newly installed fan, and the balancing kit in the last one takes care of nearly everything that's left.
Cause 1
The hanging ball isn't seated in the bracket groove
Symptom: a rhythmic click or clack, and a wobble you can see at every speed.
The ball at the top of the downrod has a groove that is meant to drop onto a raised ridge inside the ceiling bracket. When it misses that ridge, the fan is no longer pivoting from a fixed point – it swings freely, and every rotation rocks it against the bracket.
- With the breaker off, loosen the canopy screws and slide the canopy down.
- Lift the fan slightly and turn the downrod until the groove on the ball drops onto the bracket ridge. You should feel a definite click as it locks.
- Let the fan settle onto the ball, then refit the canopy.
Cause 2
Blade screws are tightened unevenly
Symptom: mild to moderate wobble, sometimes with a faint vibrating hum. The fan feels slightly loose when you touch a blade.
If one blade-to-motor screw is driven harder than its neighbours, it pulls that blade a fraction closer to the motor and throws the whole set out of balance. Wooden blades make this worse: the wood compresses, so equal hand force matters more than "as tight as possible".
- Mount the motor housing to the ceiling first. Don't fit the blades on the floor and lift the whole assembly – that's how blade brackets get knocked out of shape.
- On the ladder, fit the blades one at a time in a cross pattern (opposite blades first) so the weight stays balanced as you go.
- Run each screw to roughly 80%. Leave no single blade fully tight yet.
- Once every blade is on, go back round and bring each screw to full with the same hand force.
- Slip the washers from the hardware kit under every screw head, groove side facing down. They protect the wood and stop it cracking.
Cause 3
A blade or blade bracket is bent
Symptom: you've re-tightened every screw and the wobble is still there. One blade visibly rides higher or lower than the rest.
Blades and their metal brackets can be bent in transit or while the fan is being handled on the ladder. A difference of just 2° at the bracket is enough to produce a wobble you can see from the sofa.
- Measure from the ceiling down to the tip of each blade in turn. Note any blade that's out by more than 3 mm.
- Metal bracket: hold the bracket close to the motor and ease it up or down by hand until that tip matches the others.
- Solid wood blade: wood can't be safely bent back. A warped wooden blade has to be replaced – contact us and we'll send one free of charge.
Cause 4
One blade sits at a different pitch
Symptom: wobble together with uneven airflow – you feel noticeably more breeze under one blade than the others.
Each blade bracket is set to about 13°. If one was bent to 15–18° during handling, that blade bites more air on every pass, producing extra lift and drag on one side of the motor.
- Yardstick method. Hold a straight edge from the ceiling downward. Turn each blade to the same position and measure the high edge and low edge of its tip. All blades should match; gently bend any bracket that doesn't.
- Swap test. Exchange the positions of two neighbouring blades. If the wobble follows the blade, that blade or bracket is the culprit. If it stays put, go back and re-check the motor mount screws.
Cause 5
The downrod or wiring connection is loose
Symptom: the whole fan sways or feels loose from the ceiling, and the canopy cover may buzz or vibrate.
Either the screws joining the downrod to the motor have worked loose, or the ceiling bracket is fixed to a junction box that was never meant to carry a moving fan.
- Confirm the downrod-to-motor connection – normally two screws plus a safety pin – is fully tight.
- Check the ceiling bracket is screwed to a fan-rated junction box: metal, marked "For Fan Support" or UL/cUL listed for 50 lb or more.
- If the fan is hanging from a plastic or lightweight box, have it swapped for a fan-rated metal one before running the fan again.
- If the canopy itself is loose, gently pry the groove at its base inward or outward until it grips snugly.
Cause 6
Blades are out of balance – use the balancing kit
Symptom: smooth on low speed, wobbles on high; causes 1–5 all check out.
No two blades weigh exactly the same, and a few grams' difference at the tip is amplified as the fan speeds up – the same way a washing machine shudders when the laundry bunches to one side. The kit in your box (a clip and adhesive weight strips) corrects this on the same principle as balancing a car tyre.
- Clip test. Snap the clip onto the trailing edge of one blade, halfway along. Run the fan on medium and watch: better, worse or no change?
- Find the blade. If it got worse, move the clip to the next blade and repeat. You're looking for the blade where the clip reduces the wobble most.
- Fine-tune. On that blade, slide the clip toward the tip, then back toward the motor, testing after each move until you find the sweet spot.
- Fix the weight. Mark the position, remove the clip and press one adhesive weight onto the top surface of the blade at that point.
- Test again. If a little wobble remains, add a second weight. Each strip is about 5 g – trim it with scissors for finer control.

Balance the blades in 10–15 minutes

Clip test, one blade at a time
Clip on the trailing edge, halfway out. Run on medium. Note whether the wobble is better, worse or unchanged, then move the clip to the next blade.
Find the sweet spot
On the blade that helped most, slide the clip toward the tip, then back toward the motor, testing each time. Stop where the fan runs smoothest.
Stick the weight on top
Mark the spot, remove the clip and press an adhesive weight onto the top surface of the blade. Still a little wobble? Add a second weight, trimmed with scissors if needed.

Install it right the first time
Most wobble is avoided at installation: motor housing on the ceiling before the blades go on, blades fitted one at a time in a cross pattern, screws taken to 80% then full, and the hanging ball clicked into its groove. This video walks through the complete install.
