Curator’s note

A stone made of layers

This exhibition gathers lamps in which the stone, not the shade, takes the lead. Each base has been cut and polished so the onyx can show what makes it rare – its banding, its color and, above all, its light.

Room I is given to table lamps in rose and blush onyx. Room II turns to the wall, with pieces in honey and pink onyx. Along the way, a material study shows the same stone unlit and lit – the moment onyx stops looking like a surface and starts looking like light.

Anatomy of onyx

Before it is a lamp, it is a stone. Here is what you are looking at when you look at onyx.

Close-up of blush onyx showing banding and rust-colored veins
Plate I – Blush onyx, detail. Select a number to read the stone.
  1. 1BandingThin layers of calcite laid down over thousands of years. Every line is a moment in the stone’s growth.
  2. 2Mineral veinsTraces of iron and other minerals tint the bands rust, peach and rose.
  3. 3Translucent depthThe crystals are fine and tightly packed, so light can travel into the stone instead of bouncing off it.
Mineral
Banded calcite – the same family as marble, but grown in layers rather than pressed.
Origin
Formed where mineral-rich water seeps through rock and leaves stone behind, band by band.
Finish
Cut, shaped and hand-polished to a deep, glassy surface.
Character
No two blocks share the same banding or color, so every lamp is its own.

Material study

Off, then on

Unlit, onyx is calm and milky. Lit from within, every band and crystal comes forward. Drag the line across the stone.

Notes on living with onyx

One of a kind
Every piece is cut from natural onyx – no two share the same bands or crystals.
Light
Each design uses the light source listed on its product page (not included). Most designs work with dimmers.
Installation
Plug-in table lamps come with a US, UK, EU or AU plug; cordless designs come with a charging cable. Wall sconces are hardwired by an electrician.
Care
Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid vinegar, lemon and harsh cleaners – they can dull polished stone.
Handling
Onyx is dense and heavy. Lift rather than drag, and place it on a stable, level surface.
Delivery
