The Capiz Shell Collection

Light, softened by the sea.

Hand-cut from the windowpane oyster off the coast of the Philippines, capiz catches a bulb the way frosted glass never could — translucent, iridescent, and warm. A material that reads as both coastal and quietly modern.

Translucent Iridescent Hand-Polished
The Material

A shell that holds the light.

Capiz is the flattened, paper-thin shell of Placuna placenta, harvested in the Visayan Sea for centuries. Long before glass was common in the Philippines, capiz was the window itself — fitted into church naves, colonial shutters, and homes built for sun and monsoon alike.

We work only with mature shells, sun-bleached and hand-trimmed until they reach a pearl-white translucency. The result is a material with the softness of paper, the strength of bone, and the glow of mother-of-pearl.

Made by Hand

From the natural coastline, handcrafted.

From raw shells to finished lamps, each step is completed through collaborative effort in a steady and rhythmic process.

i.

Shell-Collecting

Hand-collected at low tide – only the most intact, flawless Capiz shells make it through.

ii.

Sun-Bleached

Cleaned, sorted, and laid on woven mats under the Cebu sun for two to three weeks – no chemicals, only time, until pearl-white.

iii.

Shape-Cut

Trimmed individually into various specific shapes on a small bench saw, then edge-polished by hand. No two truly identical.

iv.

Lamp-Assembled

Capiz shells are attached to the hand-welded lamp frame using connecting rings, or glued onto a transparent plate. Finally, the finished piece is hand-sanded.

The Glow

A warmer light,
without the glare.

Because every shell is translucent rather than transparent, capiz diffuses light evenly — no hot spots, no harsh edges. The pearl undertones lift a warm bulb into something that reads as candlelight rather than a fixture.

  • Color Temp

Best with 2700K warm-white bulbs. Cooler temps wash out the iridescence.

  • Diffusion

Soft, ambient — no direct glare, even at close range.

  • Movement

Stitched shells catch a faint draft, with a soft, wind-chime quietness.

The Collection

Three forms, one quiet language.

A chandelier to anchor the room. A sconce to frame the wall. A table lamp for the corner where evening happens.

In Your Home

Coastal, modern, or somewhere in between.

Capiz lives easily across American interiors — from a Hamptons dining room to a Southern California bedroom.

The Designer's Edit

"Capiz is the rare material that reads luxe and laid-back at once — which is exactly what most American homes are actually trying to be."

— Pinlighting Design Team

Pair it with warm wood.

White oak, walnut, or rattan furniture brings out capiz's pearl tones without competing.

Hang lower than glass.

Because capiz diffuses softly, you can mount a chandelier 6–8″ lower than a glass equivalent.

Layer with linen.

Pair a capiz sconce with linen drapery or upholstery — the textures speak the same language.

Care & Keeping

Light dusting,
nothing more.

Capiz is a natural material and rewards a gentle hand. Properly cared for, the pearl tone holds for decades.

  • i.
Dust monthly with a microfiber cloth.
Avoid feather dusters — quills can catch the edges of cut shell.
  • ii.
    Never submerge or spray.
If a damp wipe is needed, use a barely-moist cloth and dry immediately.
  • iii.
    Keep out of direct sun.
Long-term sun exposure can fade the pearl undertones. A few feet from a south-facing window is ideal.
  • iv.
    Use 2700K, 40W-equivalent bulbs.
Warm light brings out the iridescence; cool light flattens it. Avoid hot incandescents in enclosed shades.
FAQ

The things customers ask.

Is capiz shell sustainable?
Yes. The windowpane oyster is a farmed and regulated species. Our suppliers harvest under fisheries permits, use the whole shell, and produce negligible waste.
Will the shells yellow over time?
Properly cared for, capiz holds its pearl tone for decades. Yellowing usually comes from prolonged moisture exposure, direct sun, or hot incandescent bulbs in enclosed shades – all of which our care guide helps you avoid.
What bulb works best?
A 2700K warm-white LED, 40W-equivalent or less per socket. Warm light brings out the iridescent undertones; cool light flattens them.
Are these fixtures damp-rated?
Capiz is moisture-sensitive – recommended for indoor use in dry environments. Not suitable for direct bathroom or outdoor installations.
How is it shipped, and can broken shade be replaced?
Each fixture ships assembled in custom foam crating. When damage is found – contact our team with your order number.
Do you offer trade pricing?
Yes. Designers, architects, and hospitality buyers receive tiered pricing through our trade program. Apply via the Trade page.
